Habitat

African manatees are animals that are distributed in western Africa.

Characteristic

The African manatee is 3-4m long and weighs 300-400kg. African manatees live in the coastal regions of West Africa, from the Senegal River to the north and the Quanza River in Angola to the south. The body is rounded throughout, the head is small, and the snout is thick and protruding. Forelimbs are long fin-shaped, with no hindlimbs. The body color is gray, but algae and the like are often growing on the body and often appear green. African manatees are similar to American manatees, but African manatees are characterized by a slightly elongated body. African manatees prefer to live in rivers and inland lakes, and are found in freshwater brackish waters, avoiding saltwater. African manatees are nocturnal animals and rest during the day. Due to its very large physique, there are few foreign enemies.

Ecology

African manatees are herbivores and live on aquatic plants. In addition to plant matter, we also eat shellfish, soft animals, and fish. Breeding is seen throughout the year and births occur from spring to summer. Polygamy has a gestation period of one year. You can give birth to one at a time. Newborn children will soon be able to swim and will reach sexual maturity in about three years. African manatees live in muddy water, making them difficult to observe and mysterious. There are still many unclear points, and research is needed.

Endangered species

African manatees are declining due to land development and water pollution in Africa. In addition, it is sometimes eaten locally, and overfishing has become a problem. Bycatch by fishing is also a problem due to its large size. Conservation activities are being carried out in western Africa, but African manatees have not been studied the most among manatees, and there are many parts where the ecology is a mystery, and the coping method is not well understood, so no results have been obtained. African manatees are currently designated as an endangered species.

Breeding

African manatees are declining in population and are quite difficult for the average person to breed. Watch at the zoo or aquarium, or head to Africa.
