Habitat

It mainly inhabits Southeast Asia (mainly Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, Nepal, Bhutan, Vietnam, Malaysia). In addition, it has been confirmed to inhabit India and China. It used to live in Singapore and Hong Kong, but it has been confirmed to be extinct.

Characteristic

The body length is 40-60 cm, the tail length is 25-35 cm, and the body height is 20 cm. The back is grayish brown or light dark brown, and the throat is white or grayish white. The webbing reaches to the last joint of the toes. It features very small claws.

Smuggling case

Endangered species

Asian Small-clawed otters are said to be difficult to breed. Habitat destruction due to agricultural land development and deforestation, water pollution and the resulting reduction in prey, and hunting for fur have reduced the population. International transactions for commercial purposes were banned in 2019. It has also been added to the Red List and is an endangered species.
