Axolotls are popular pets and some people keep them, so I will explain them. It is an animal that is classified in the genus Tiger Salamander, in the order Amphibidae and the family Salamander. This amphibian is native to Mexico and is a very popular pet. However, many people do not know that this axolotl is actually on the verge of extinction. In Mexico, habitat destruction and water pollution due to urban development and tourism development are becoming a problem, and it is becoming clear that their population is drastically decreasing.
Axolotls live in Mexico. English: Axolotl, scientific name: Ambystoma mexicanum. The name axolotl was coined in Japan. The official name is “Mexican salamander”. In its native Mexico, it was called the “axolotl.” Because it is a very popular animal, illustrations and images of it are on sale, and the prices are low. They are sometimes depicted on supercars, and even become characters in games. It is an animal with gills and is very small in size. Artificial food is preferable.
The axolotl has a total length of 10-25 cm. Males are larger than females. The body color on the back is gray with dark brown spots. In captivity, various color variations such as bleached individuals appear as varieties. Currently, you can see 5 kinds of color variations. Lake Xochimilco, the origin of Axolotl, is located at an altitude of 2240 m and lives in low temperatures of 10-26 degrees Celsius in hot weather and 5-21 degrees Celsius in cold weather. Axolotl is a very rare creature that lives only in some canals of Mexico City, the capital of Mexico. Axolotl is bred in ordinary households and may also be used in aquariums and laboratory animals.
Axolotl sucks mollusks, earthworms, insects, crustaceans, fish, etc. before inhaling and preying on them. The breeding style is oviparous and breeds from November to April. It lays 200-1000 eggs at a time, such as in aquatic plants. You can live up to 15 years in captivity.
Types of axolotl
There are the following types of axolotls:
- half color
Leucistic is a popular standard variety. Because of its white body, it stands out in many ways. Marble is characterized by beige to yellow color. Golden is a shiny yellow axolotl. Black is black and blue is blue.
Axolotls have a property called neoteny. They can reproduce without growing into adults and spend their entire lives as juveniles.
It has been suggested that it may become extinct in Mexico, the place of origin of Axolotl. Land development and water pollution have become the biggest problems, and the axolotl population is declining. It was a subject of worship during the Aztec Empire in the Middle Ages, but it is in a critical situation due to environmental destruction. In 1992, the Mexican government established the “Xochimilco, San Gragorio Atrapulco Nature Reserve” to protect the remaining habitat of the Mexican salamander. However, no major results were achieved, and the habitat was no longer confirmed in Lake Smpango, Lake Chalco, Lake Texcoco, etc. It has been listed in CITES Annex II since the entry into force of the Washington Convention in 1975. It is also designated as an endangered species.
The axolotl is listed as a wildlife species in the Appendix of CITES, and there are restrictions on import and export. However, since this animal used to be distributed all over the world, it is not that difficult to obtain.
If you want to keep an axolotl, you need to prepare food to feed it. Basics When feeding an adult axolotl, it is recommended that you prepare a simple artificial food that is relatively nutritionally balanced, or something similar, which is normally eaten by newts, goldfish, and tropical fish. Please be careful as accidental ingestion is common in water.
We recommend the aquarium to be at least 30cm to 45cm. It prefers a relatively low water temperature of 10 to 20 degrees Celsius. To manage it, it is best to use a type with a fan or cooler that can cool and keep warm at the same time. Also do regular maintenance. Since excrement accumulates, it is standard practice to clean it every 1 to 2 weeks.
Be sure to install a filter in your aquarium, as it will prevent the water from getting dirty. Aquarium filters are essential for stabilizing water quality. Also, try changing the water and cleaning at the same time. Please note that if you raise your cat, its lifespan will exceed 10 years, so please keep it away from companions as much as possible and allow it to live on its own.
Place a water thermometer to check whether the water temperature is appropriate in summer or winter. A thermometer is highly recommended in order to manage the water temperature as a guide to avoid freezing the water too much and to avoid getting sick. If the changes are too large, you will not be able to maintain adequate physical condition.
