The Canadian Rockies are a beautiful World Heritage Site. At the same time, however, it is also well-known for animal tourism. Consisting of four national parks and three provincial parks, the Canadian Rockies are known for being home to many cute animals. You can meet the following animals in the Canadian Rockies. Be careful as some can attack humans. Enjoy the majestic mountains, sparkling blue glaciers and glacial lakes, and play with the animals at the same time.

big horn

The bighorn is also known as the bighorn sheep. It is an artiodactyl that belongs to the family Bovidae. They live from the United States to Canada, and are known for fighting with each other by butting their horns between September and December. The sound of horns clashing over the mountains echoes for hours as they collide with each other at speeds of 30km/h until one concedes and runs away. They spend their summers at altitudes of 1,800-2,600 meters, and in winter they migrate to altitudes of 750-1,500 meters to avoid the cold and snow.

Chipmunk

A squirrel classified in the genus Chipmunk of the Sciuridae family of the Mammalia order. They are diurnal and solitary, and are often seen by lakes and in towns. They sometimes approach humans for food. Canadian Rocky squirrels are small and cute.

Pika

An animal classified in the Lagomorpha pika family. Pikas are diurnal, usually more active during the day, and live in high altitude areas. Pikas living in the United States and Canada are said to be at risk of extinction in the future, and their numbers are declining.

In North America, red deer are commonly called elk. Inhabits coniferous forests and mixed forests of coniferous and deciduous trees, living alone or in groups of several in summer, and forming groups of around 10 in winter. Beaver

An animal of the order Rodentia Beaver. It inhabits wetlands around rivers, lakes, ponds, and marshes. Beavers are nocturnal and can only be seen in the early evening or early morning. The beaver, which is also Canada’s national animal, is often seen near the rivers of the Canadian Rockies.

Mountain goat

Grizzly bear

Beware of bears when visiting the Canadian Rockies. They can also kill humans, so be sure to run away if you see them. It is one of the largest bears inhabiting the North American region and is very threatening because it can run at about 50 kilometers per hour. It is also good at swimming and has a larger physique than humans, so it cannot be defeated by ordinary people.

Black bear

  • act in large numbers as much as possible
  • Only hike trails maintained by Parks Canada
  • Observe the limit on the number of people walking on the trail
  • use bear spray
  • don’t irritate bears
