Rock hyrax is an animal of the genus Hyrax that lives in Africa. The Hilux looks a lot like a mouse or a rabbit, but it’s a different creature. It is a ungulate with primitive characteristics and is also known as Rock Hyrax. The Hilux is currently classified as Least Concern and is not threatened with extinction right now. However, the population is decreasing every year. Extinction is imminent in some areas, and Israel’s population is declining significantly.
Rock hyrax lives in parts of the Middle East and the African Continent.
Rock hyrax is a small animal with a body length of 40-50 cm and a weight of 2-5 kg. Short gray hairs are densely grown on the chunky body, and the color is darker on the ventral side than on the back side. The limbs are short and have few tails. The maxillary incisors are rootless and will last a lifetime. Rock hyrax inhabits rocky areas, savanna, shrub forests, and in some areas rainforests. It is a social animal that lives in a herd and lives in groups of several to dozens of animals. It is a diurnal animal that is active especially in the morning and evening, but it can also be active at night. There are quite a lot of natural enemies such as saber-toothed tiger, caracal, mongoose, snake and owl. Rock hyrax is also good at climbing trees, sometimes climbing trees when escaping from natural enemies. Alternatively, the rock hyrax may escape between the rocks. Since the Hilux is a primitive creature, it cannot regulate body temperature well. Therefore, when it’s cold, you can play in the sun, and when it’s hot, you can stay still in Iwanai or in the shade.
In addition to grass and bark, the rock hyrax lives on leaves, nuts, fruits, flowers, and liverworts. It is polygamy and the breeding season varies from region to region. You can give birth to 1-6 animals at a time during the gestation period of 6 to 8 months. Immediately after giving birth, the child’s eyes are open and the hair is fully grown. Weaning takes about 3 months and takes about 16 months to produce and ripen. It is said that the lifespan in captivity is about 15 years, and in the wild it is about 10 years. According to the longevity record in captivity, a female who died on March 15, 1987 at the Virginia Zoological Park in Virginia, USA, was 14 years old.
Rock hyrax has a wide range and is currently unlikely to become extinct. However, Israel is currently in danger of extinction. This has become a problem for humans who eat Hilux to be targeted for hunting and for hunting for fur. In Israel, the government is currently making animals designated for protection, and conservation activities are being carried out.
Rock hyrax is not endangered except in Israel and can be bred. If you want to see the wild, go to the zoo or go to Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. When breeding, please prepare at least the following tools.
Rock hyrax has a habit of hiding behind rocks and resting, so prepare something that will serve as a hideout as a cage.
For drinking fountains, install a water dispenser used for breeding dogs and rabbits in the cage.
Since the body temperature regulation function of Cape Hyrax is weak, please buy an air conditioner.
Let’s prepare a toilet.
A carry bag is required to take you to a veterinary clinic.
Rock hyrax should be bred with vegetables and fruits. You can eat pellets and pasture for herbivores.
