Cats are creatures that sleep very well. Sleeping time is the longest among animals, sloths and koalas sleep 20 hours a day, but cats are not defeated either. Kittens are said to sleep 20 hours a day, spending most of their time sleeping. In Japan, it was named “cat” because it is a creature that sleeps like a child. I wrote an article about why cats are just sleeping. There are good reasons and backgrounds for long sleep.
Carnivores sleep well
Carnivores, including humans, tend to sleep well. Carnivores only have to work desperately during hunting time, so they can spend the rest of the time leisurely. However, on the other hand, herbivores generally tend to sleep less. Giraffes sleep only 2 hours and cows only 4 hours. The exceptions are sloths and koalas, but other herbivores have mostly short sleep times. The reason is that there is a risk of being attacked by carnivores. I don’t know when I’ll be killed if I sleep deeply for a long time.
In the case of cats, kittens and old cats often sleep. The average daily sleep time is over 20 hours. Adult cats take about 14-15 hours. By the way, felines sleep well overall. However, this is not the case with wild cats. In the wild, you need to protect yourself from foreign enemies, and sleep about half a day. In comparison, domestic cats have no enemies, so there is a difference that they sleep more than two-thirds a day.
Reasons to sleep well
So why are cats always sleeping? There are three reasons for this.
Cats must hunt to survive, catch and eat herbivores and small animals. From such a background, it is necessary to exert 100% power when hunting, and it is necessary to constantly store energy. Therefore, when not hunting, it is necessary to live as much as possible without moving and wasting energy.
It is said that cats are always sleeping, but in reality they do not fall asleep as deeply as humans. There are two types of sleep: REM sleep, in which the brain is active and the muscles are resting, and non-REM sleep, in which the brain is resting. In humans, REM sleep accounts for about 80% of sleep time, but cats are not. Studies investigating the sleep cycle of cats have found that they sleep for short periods of time and spend less time in deep sleep. Cats take a long time to enter deep sleep, REM sleep, and after 20 to 30 minutes, REM sleep lasts for 6 to 7 minutes and repeats the cycle.
To protect yourself from foreign enemies
There is one reason why cats that sleep well sleep lightly. Even though cats are carnivores, they need to protect themselves from foreign enemies. Therefore, it is unlikely that you will fall asleep deeply. Cats may be eaten by crows when they are kittens, so you need to protect yourself. This is because if you sleep soundly all the time, you will be killed.
How to sleep a cat
There are many ways to sleep a cat, but for good reason. The way a cat sleeps changes depending on the season. It has a great influence on the regulation of body temperature, and when it is hot, it expands to release heat in the body, and when it is cold, it contracts to prevent heat from escaping. The posture to sleep changes depending on the season at that time.
Stretch out and sleep on hot days
During the summer months and when it is damp, you need to release your body’s heat. Do you often exhale when your cat is awake? That is a gesture to release the heat in the body. When I go to bed, I stretch out my limbs and try to sleep, or hide in the shade.
Curl up on a cold day
In the cold winter months, you will behave differently than in the summer. It curls up like an ammonite, and this time it sleeps in a fashion that does not release heat from the body. In winter, diving in warm places, kotatsu, or human futons is a protective measure to prevent the release of heat from the body.
Sleep on your back
If the cat is lying on its back and sleeping, the owner is very reassured and proof of trust. This is a cat sleeping with complete peace of mind because there is no possibility of being attacked by foreign enemies. When I sleep in this form, I often fall asleep deeply.
Sleep in a catloaf
It is a figure that sleeps in a sitting posture with the front legs folded inside the body. I’m not as relaxed as when I lie on my back and sleep. This way of sitting doesn’t touch the ground, so you can’t act instantly, but if you don’t trust the owner to some extent, you don’t often sleep in this position.
It is a figure that sleeps with his face crouched on his front legs. This is the lightest sleep and is ready to deal with foreign enemies as soon as they come. In some cases, you can act immediately, so you can feel nervous.
Lack of sleep
As mentioned above, cats are always sleeping, but they are creatures that sleep lightly for a very long time. However, on the other hand, it is very dangerous if you do not sleep much. This is because cats lose their appetite and physical strength if they continue to lack sleep. If you have little sleep, see your veterinarian immediately as it may be gastrointestinal or cardiomyopathy.
Introducing a Canadian cat cafe
People who have never owned a pet will suddenly hesitate to keep one. Why don’t you actually come in contact with your pet once there? This time I would like to introduce a cat cafe in Canada. It’s very fashionable at a cat cafe in French speaking Montreal. It is a shop where you can take off your shoes at the entrance. Please be careful as it is a rule that sleeping cats should not be woken up. There is no time charge at this shop and you can have lunch slowly. Please refrain from the following acts because there are prohibited matters.
- Wake up a sleeping cat
- Make a loud noise
- Embrace the cat
- Feed the cat
- Harass a cat
