There are various creatures in animals, from large to small. Did you know that smaller animals have higher heart rates and larger animals have lower heart rates? Mammalian animals, including humans, are said to have a limited heart rate. And there is a difference in the way time flows depending on whether it is small or large. With some exceptions, most organisms are said to reach their end of life when the heart rings 1 to 2 billion times.
Heart rate and longevity
Below is a list of heart rate and longevity in mammals. As you can see, there is a strong causal relationship between heart rate and longevity. You will find that smaller animals have higher heart rates, larger animals have lower heart rates, and organisms with lower heart rates live longer.
name | Heart rate (times / minute) | Life (year) |
Human | 66 | 82-88 |
Rabbit | 205-220 | 6-7 |
Dog | 50-130 | 15 |
Cat | 110-140 | 15 |
Horse | 23-46 | 30 |
Mouse | 600-700 | 2-3 |
Hamster | 200-500 | 5 |
Flying squirrel | 200-300 | 5 |
Turtle | 10 | 100 |
Why Small Animals Have High Heart Rate
Smaller animals have a faster heart rate than larger animals. Considering the distance that blood goes around the body and returns, smaller creatures are faster. This inevitably increases the number of times the heart beats.

There are exceptions. For example, mice have a lifespan of several years, but the naked mole rat can live for about 20-30 years. The reason for this is that the naked mole rat is a mouse that can live in anoxic conditions, and in a low oxygen environment, it may lower the heart rate and stop breathing. You can say that you live longer because you can save your heart rate.
Why Large Animals Have Low Heart Rate
It is said that the heart rate of an elephant is about 30 times a minute and the life span is about 70 to 80 years. In contrast to mice, it has a very low heart rate. Considering the distance that blood goes around the body and returns, larger creatures are slower.

Humans are an exception
Humans are an exception among mammals. It is generally said that most living things reach their end of life when the heart rings 1 to 2 billion times. However, the number of modern people living up to the age of 90 is increasing, and the total heart rate since birth is more than 3 billion times. This is more than double the lifetime total heart rate of other animals. The main reason for this is that medical care is improving and anti-aging is progressing. It is said that human life will reach 120 years in the future, and it will continue to be an exceptional existence among mammals.
