Dnipro was already inhabited by Slavic peoples since ancient times. In the Middle Ages, it was invaded by the Tatars and later became part of the Russian Empire. The city was founded in 1775 and was then called Ekaterinoslav. After the Russian Revolution, the city was renamed Dnipro. The Dnipro Historical Museum lost 90% of its collection in World War II and the museum building collapsed. After the war, the museum was restored to include 87 pieces of church ornaments, artefacts and stone statues.

The Jewish Holocaust History Museum is located on the 3rd floor of the Menorah Center. It showcases the horrors of war the world suffered after the Nazis came to power.

Dnipro, the city of fountains, has many fountains in Ukraine. Built in 2005, the Light Music Fountain is the most famous fountain. The central jet reaches a height of about 50m, making it one of the tallest fountains in Dnipro.
