Animal

Jack rabbits are rabbits that live from North America to Mexico. The biggest feature is the large ears and hind legs. It’s actually a hare, not a rabbit, and the name Jack Rabbit is named after its big ears. Jack rabbits can be divided into 5 types. Some Jack Rabbits are extinct, and the entire species is not now extinct, but it is suggested that it may become extinct in the future.

habitat

The jackrabbit (black-tailed jackrabbit) is a rabbit that lives from North America to Mexico. The scientific name is Lepus californicus. Jackrabbits belong to the Lagomorpha family, Lagomorpha, and the genus Hare. Their main diet is leaves of plants in the summer and buds and bark of trees in the winter, and their small bodies make them easy targets for large mammals.

Characteristic

The biggest feature of Jack Rabbit is its big ears. The total length is 60 cm and the weight is 1 to 4 kg. This rabbit appeared as “Jackass Rabbit” in the book “Roughing It” by American author Mark Twain, and was named after this rabbit. There are five types of Jack Rabbits, all of which live in the Midwest of North America. It’s very fast and can run at 60km / h. It is a slightly small rabbit with elongated limbs. Be vigilant, detect danger with your ears, and escape as soon as an enemy approaches.

Ecology

Jack rabbits live in desert areas, farms and plains, and their staple food is grass, nuts and bark. The breeding of Jack rabbits is embryonic. It has excellent fertility and can give birth to 1 to 6 animals at a time. In addition, there are several breeding seasons a year. Therefore, there are some areas where the population may increase due to the rapid breeding. Jack rabbits have a very strong appetite and can eat all the grass in the neighborhood.

Endangered species

Jack Rabbit is not in such a critical situation right now. Its fertility is so high that it is unlikely to become extinct. However, some species are in crisis. The white-tailed jackrab, one of the jack rabbits, has been confirmed to be extinct in some areas. It’s safe overall, but it’s partly in crisis. Historically, Jack Rabbits have been hunted for fur and food. Therefore, it may be dangerous in the future.

Breeding

I don’t hear many examples of having a Jack Rabbit. Also, since Jack rabbits are infected with the infectious disease rabbit viral hemorrhagic disease, it is questionable whether they can be cared for by the general public. Watch at the zoo or visit the Americas.
