Endangered Asian Species : Markhor

Animal

Markhor live in groups in the mountainous forests to the west of the Himalayas. It is an endangered animal of the genus Bovidae. It means “King of wild goats” in Persian. There are several variants depending on the region. There are four variants: Hindu Kush Markhor, Kashmir Markhor, Slyman Markhor, and Khaibar Markhor. The largest goat companion, living in the central and western regions of Asia. It was overfished by humans because it was edible and it was believed that the horns were medicinal.

Habitat

It inhabits Afghanistan, Iran, India, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, etc.

Characteristic

Markhor is characterized by having horns on both males and females. It has a characteristic shape like a cork bottle opener and is very easy to understand. The corners of Markhor are flat and twisted and are about 25 cm long. It may break at a corner and often stretch into a distorted shape. There is a bone core inside the horn, and unlike deer animals, it does not regenerate every year and continues to grow for the rest of its life. The front of the forelimb’s wrist and the front of the hind limb’s heel are covered with dark hair.

Ecology

Markhor has the largest physique of any wild goat and is a social animal that lives in groups in mountainous forests. The herd forms a group of 5 to 30 heads. The diet is a plant diet and eats grasses. We are active during the day and at night. It has excellent sight and smell, and escapes as soon as it feels dangerous. Polygamy, breeding from autumn to winter. One animal is born during the gestation period of 135 to 170 days. A child can stand immediately after birth and wean in about half a year.
