[Japan: Keeping otters at home] Points to note about pet-friendly rental housing and breeding environments

Pet

In Japan, there are properties that allow pets. Since Japan is a small country, there are many properties that do not allow pets. In particular, it is necessary to be a little nervous about housing complexes. So, what kind of property is it possible to keep otters? I have written an article about its characteristics and points to note about the breeding environment.

Pet friendly rental properties

Basically, if you want to keep an otter, you need to choose a pet-friendly housing. This is because there are many dense residential areas in Japan, especially in urban areas, and there is a problem that depending on the location, complaints will come and you will be kicked out. Otters are more difficult to keep than cats and dogs, so this point is even more important. The breeding difficulty is described below, but the points when choosing a house are summarized below. When choosing a property, it is wiser to leave it to a certain extent to a contractor rather than looking for it yourself. This is because there are not many properties that allow pets.

Used property

Pets are generally not allowed in properties where pets are allowed. However, if it is a second-hand property, the owner often gives up and compromises. The reason for this is that most people don’t want to live in second-hand properties because they are over 20 or 30 years old. Owners can’t earn rental income if there is no one to live in, so they want tenants.

property in the suburbs

Properties like those in the city center are generally very popular and fill up quickly, while quieter suburbs are less popular. As a result, the owner sometimes compromises due to the background of not many people living there. Depending on negotiations, even if the property does not allow pets, the owner may allow it.

secret breeding

Otters can be kept secretly, but they tend to be more easily detected than cats and dogs. Because of its loud cry and its large amount of exercise, it is easy to make noise. In the unlikely event that you are caught, you may be ordered to leave, so it is not a good idea to keep them secretly.

moving

The cost of moving in Japan varies depending on the time and amount of luggage. March and April are peak seasons, so try to avoid them as much as possible. It costs about 60,000 yen on average for a single person. Let’s estimate about 100,000 for a family of two. A family of three costs 120,000, and a family of four costs about 130,000. It is wise to keep your moving costs as low as possible. There are many companies that will give you a bulk estimate, so it is better to choose a cheaper company.

Breeding Difficulty of Otters

Considering the habits of otters, it is better to think that the degree of difficulty in breeding is slightly higher than that of cats and dogs. This is because of the following reasons.

Momentum

The biggest feature of otters is that they have a lot of exercise. Otters have an overwhelming amount of exercise compared to cats and dogs. It can be said that breeding is very difficult because it touches and plays with various things all day long. They are very curious animals, and their owners may get tired.

cry

Otters are very cute animals, but their cry is very loud. Their high-pitched chirps make it easy for their voices to echo, so it’s best to choose a location with thick walls or a detached house. If you live in a densely packed house, fights may occur between neighbors.

Nocturnality

Some species of otter are nocturnal. Small-clawed otters are a typical example, but they move around at night and can disturb your sleep.  A high-pitched cry can be heard at night, so you may not be able to sleep.

bite the cable

Otters are more curious creatures than cats. If you find an internet line or an electrical cord, it may bite you mercilessly. It is very dangerous because there is a risk of electrocution by chewing on the wiring. When building a network environment, it is better not only to choose a contractor but also to get advice as much as possible. The contractor has seen a number of houses, so he will present an improvement plan.

injury

Otters are also very curious creatures, so they will bite your finger to show their interest in anything. The otter’s jaws are so strong that some people bleed. Care must be taken when breeding.

Move-out fee

If you have a pet, the average move-out fee is said to be the rent + 100,000 to 200,000 yen. For cats, the biggest problem is scratches and bites. Walls, floors, pillars, etc. are easily damaged, so there are many cases where the cost is added.

Scratches/breaks in walls

Most of the walls are covered with wallpaper, but if there are scratches, it will cost about 50,000 yen. Walls are probably the most common place cats scratch.

Flooring/Tatami

Flooring replacement costs often cost about 100,000 yen. Cats often scratch and bite on floors, so you are likely to be charged for repairs.

Dirty or torn shoji

It costs around 2,000 to 8,000 yen to reupholster a fusuma or shoji. Cats tear shoji screens quickly, so be careful.
