Animal

Przewalski’s horse is a horse that was thought to be extinct in the wild in 1969, but it is actually an animal that has been confirmed to be alive. However, the population is so small that it is an endangered animal. It is a horse that is also known as Tahi or Psibarski horse. Currently, the number of Przewalski horses in Mongolia has reached about 800, but it is said that the number of individuals is still small. Horses that live in the grasslands of the Eurasian continent are currently undergoing conservation activities with the aim of reviving them.

Habitat

They are in the grasslands of the Eurasian continent centered on Mongolia.

Characteristic

With a short, muscular body, Przewalski horses are smaller in size than other domesticated horses. Their mouths are white and they wear large heads and upright dark manes along their necks. Body length 2.2-2.6m, height 1.2-1.4m, weight 200-300kg. We live as a family with social animals. I like grasslands and live in plains and shrublands. Its body shape is quite solid and it is very strong compared to other horses. There is a dark brown band on the back.

Ecology

They live in groups with highly social animals, but the herd consists of several females and their children, centered on the leader female, and it seems that there is a hierarchy. The food is mainly grass. I eat grass, leaves, bark, etc. Breeding occurs from spring to summer. I won’t start looking for someone until I’m 5 years old. Females can give birth at the age of 3 and have a gestation period of 11-12 months. A foal can stand about an hour after birth. Foals begin grazing within a few weeks, but do not wean for 8 to 13 months after birth. The foal matures sexually at the age of two.

Endangered species

In 1969, wild individuals were declared extinct. However, thirty years later, Przewalski’s horse was discovered, planned breeding in captivity began, and attempts to return the offspring of the captive individuals to the wild were continued in various places. As a result of supporting conservation activities and breeding, the number of Przewalski horses in Mongolia has reached about 800. In the United States, there are also clones of Przewalski’s horses made from frozen DNA collected from Przewalski’s horses kept at the San Diego Zoo.

Breeding

Przewalski horses are currently in very low numbers and are nearly impossible to breed by the general public. Therefore, watch it at the zoo or go directly to Mongolia.
