Pygmy hog inhabits India.

Characteristic

Pygmy hog is a small animal measuring about 50-75 cm in length and weighing 5-10 kg. It inhabits the Assam region of India and is the smallest species of Suidae. The skin is taupe and covered with dark brown bristles. The pinna is small and oval. Pygmy hog inhabits wetlands with tall grass. It used to live in the Himalayas. Pygmy hogs dig small trenches and build small nests. They are in the nest to survive the heat of the day. Pygmy hogs live in groups. It usually forms a herd of around 4-10 heads.

Ecology

Pygmy hogs feed on roots, tubers, insects, rodents, and small reptiles. The breeding style is embryo. The gestation period is about 3-4 months. It breeds from April to May and can produce 2-6 heads at a time. Lifespan is 10-12 years. Newborn children are pink and sexually mature at the age of 1-2 years.

Endangered species
