Endangered African Species: Serval

Animal

Servals are wild cats that live south of the Sahara Desert in Africa. It used to live near Algeria, but it is now extinct. A cat that lives on the waterfront of the African savanna and is very good at climbing trees. It is known as a cat with high physical strength that can jump up to a height of 2 to 3 m. It is said to be an elegant cat because of its beautiful fur, slender legs and long legs. However, it is in danger of extinction due to hunting.

Habitat

Characteristic

The serval is 60-90 cm long and weighs 7-18 kg. Serval has very clean hair and short and soft body hair. The body color is yellow or tan, and the abdomen and the inside of the limbs are white. The serval cat’s personality is ferocious and alert, so unless it’s rare, you won’t get along with it. A cat that is good at climbing trees and has excellent jumping power. The limbs are long and elegant. It is called a savanna supermodel and its body shape is very similar to the model. It is a cat that acts alone like other cats. It inhabits savanna, grasslands and forests, and prefers swamps and rivers. We mainly hunt at night and early in the morning.

Ecology

Servals also eat rabbits, birds, and sometimes small antelopes. It is said that servals do not have a fixed breeding season. The gestation period is 10 to 11 weeks, and 2-3 animals can be born at a time. Newborn children are raised by females. About two months after birth, you can eat the same meal as an adult cat. It will become independent one year after birth. Lifespan is 10-15 years in the wild. You can live for about 20 years in captivity.

Endangered species

The serval used to live in Algeria, but it has already become extinct. I currently live south of the Sahara Desert. Servals have been overfished because of their beautiful fur and high prices. Therefore, the number of habitats is decreasing. It is now designated as an endangered species and is classified as Least Concern. In addition, habitat is decreasing due to land development, and it is in danger of extinction. Protected by the Washington Convention.

Breeding
