In 2022, Putin’s frenzy in Russia led to the invasion of Ukraine. Russia’s scramble to attack Ukraine has also led to attacks on civilians and infrastructure that have been criticized around the world. And in Ukraine, which has turned into a battlefield, many animals have also been killed by the Russians. How are the animals rescued in Ukraine?
Indiscriminate attack by Russia
Russia initially intended to overthrow the current Zelensky regime and establish a puppet regime in Ukraine immediately. However, even after more than half a year, the Russian army has not been able to capture it, and the Russian army is short of weapons and ammunition, and the death toll is increasing rapidly, and it is being attacked by Ukraine. On the other hand, the Russian army, which has been cornered, has become conspicuous in actions that can be taken as desperation, such as slaughtering civilians and attacking infrastructure. This is partly against the backdrop of Russia’s global isolation, with no support from China or India. And just as many Ukrainians are being killed by Russia’s indiscriminate attacks, so are the animals living in Ukraine.
Volunteer activity
Currently in Ukraine rescue activities for people are actively carried out, but at the same time rescue activities for animals are also active.
Rescue by ex-soldier
Although it is a war, it has nothing to do with animals, it is a killing that humans started on their own. Despite this, many animals are also being victimized by missiles and bombs. Under such circumstances, activities such as former Ukrainian military personnel are taking place as volunteers to rescue animals in combat areas. Some of the animals have become strays after losing their parents to missile attacks and bombings. Such animals would not be able to survive on the battlefield.
UAnimals
Uanimals is a charity founded by Oleksandr Todorchuk in 2016. Since the invasion of Ukraine, the organization has funded shelters, purchased food and medicine, found foster families, organized and managed animal shelters, recruited and coordinated volunteers. Currently, free spaying and neutering of stray animals is carried out in Kharkiv, Chernivtsi, Zaporizhia, Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Poltava, Chernihiv, Khmelnytsky, Cherkasy and other cities.
Centaur Foundation
A Polish animal protection organization works in Medika, near the Ukrainian border. We are building temporary shelters and have rescued over 1,000 dogs and cats from Ukraine. Of course, there are many dogs and cats that have lost their owners in this number, and we will be looking for foster parents in the future.
Tailed Hostages of War
It is a volunteer organization that supplies food to animals on the verge of starvation in Ukraine. We mainly purchase and deliver food, water, fuel for heating, and generators to evacuation shelters.
Happy Paw
Volunteer organization that provides medical care for animals. We provide food and water for the rescued animals, arrange accommodation, and so on. We also provide rehabilitation facilities for animals after treatment.
Kyiv Animal Rescue Group
As the name suggests, it is an animal protection group active near the capital Kyiv. We protect animals and other animals trapped inside houses that have collapsed due to shelling. We also evacuate rescued animals.

Ukrainian endangered species
Tuzli is a treasure trove of Ukrainian animals. National Tuzli Lagoon Park is a national park in Ukraine and most of the birds are listed as endangered in Ukraine and Europe. Common shelducks, white-fronted geese, whooper swans, curlews, black stilts, stilts, and leopard geese are all critically endangered. In addition, about 300 species of wild birds can be seen in the national park, and about 60 species of fish live in the reservoirs. 37 species of animals also live here. Russia continues its indiscriminate attacks today, and many people and animals are being victimized. Russia must be expelled from the world as soon as possible.
