Endangered African Species: Pygmy hippopotamus

Pygmy hippopotamus is one of the three most rare beasts in the world. Pandas, hippo and okapi are said to be living fossils. Although it looks like a small version of a hippo, it actually has various characteristics that are different from those of a hippo. Pygmy hippopotamus is basically nocturnal and is most active from evening to midnight.

Endangered Africa: Hippo

Hippos can be seen in picture books and are one of the largest land animals that live in African rivers and lakes. Hippos are said to be the third heaviest terrestrial animal, and some can weigh up to 4,500 kg. Hippos, which live on the African continent south of the Sahara desert, are known as animals with large mouths. However, this hippo is actually an endangered species. Habitat fragmentation, loss, and overhunting have become very serious problems, and their numbers continue to decline year by year. Hippos are listed as an endangered species.
